My philosophy as an educator/facilitator
The child's heart awakens
and is a Gold Fountain
Spilling forth rainbows
and silver dreams
let us tenderly water each delicate leaf
each song each climb
each dance each drawing
each jump each smile
each word each wing
that lifts into our hearts
asking for light
let us as teachers
glow for them too
like the Sun
raying forth story and song
the love of a life lived long
so their imaginations
may take flight
into flower and blossom
within a forest lush and singing and kind
I am an artist-teacher. Co-creation, collaboration, experimentation, improvisation: each of these mentalities describes my approach to teaching as an art form. The teacher, child, parent and environment are not separate, but linked like interwoven colors of a rainbow tapestry.
A rich and abundant life arises out of the harmonious co-creation of the Sun, heavens and Earth. So too, does a rich space radiating with the love of experimentation, play and learning depend upon the strength of our collaborations as children, teachers, parents and communities.
As an artist, I desire to facilitate a warm, creative space that inspires and nurtures each child both inwardly and outwardly. The sense of light, the intentional preparation of materials, sounds and music, colors and texture, an attitude of wonder and inquiry, an atmosphere of love and support; a rich and nurturing environment is essential to life-filled learning. And as a process-driven artist myself, I enjoy cultivating space for children to meander down long and unpredictable paths of their own making, without any attachment to product.
As a teacher, I desire not to direct the child/student, but to provide the supports necessary for the child/student to come to her own meaning. Each child holds within them their own universe of knowing; at birth, each child's unique destiny spreads forth like a vast rainbow ocean, incapable of replication. Thus, as teachers we are simply guides, breathing in and breathing out, stepping in and stepping out, giving and receiving, cultivating the symmetry of relationship; learner and teacher are one.

Musical tree chimes
Fall 2019 at the Washington Waldorf School
An interactive instrument-sculpture, installed in a children's play garden. Children could shake the chimes, to hear a bell tone, ring them with a mallet, or fill them with nature, water and earth.
